Christiana Ashley has been elected President of the Ghana Chess Association following a closely contested election that has drawn significant attention within the sporting community.

The polls, held over the weekend, marked a pivotal leadership transition for the federation, with delegates casting their votes amid governance concerns raised in the lead-up to the election. Ashley secured victory over her main contender, David Achempong, in what observers described as a tightly fought race.

Prior to the election, objections had been filed challenging Ashley’s eligibility, citing governance and administrative issues. Some petitioners referenced her previous role within the National Sports Authority and called for further scrutiny. However, the electoral process proceeded as scheduled, with delegates ultimately endorsing her leadership.

In her acceptance remarks, Christiana Ashley pledged to promote transparency, strengthen grassroots development and expand competitive opportunities for young players across the country.

The outcome signals a new chapter for Ghanaian chess, as stakeholders look to the incoming administration to consolidate recent gains and address lingering concerns about governance and growth within the sport.
