Ghana and Indonesia are considering a formal partnership in sports development following discussions between Indonesia’s Honorary Consul to Ghana, Paskal A.B. Rois, and the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams.

The meeting, held at the Ministry, centered on deepening bilateral ties through structured cooperation in football and grassroots sports, alongside potential cultural and educational exchanges. Rois noted that while he has previously facilitated engagements between Indonesia and other Ghanaian ministries, the sports sector has yet to benefit from such collaboration.

He revealed that several young Ghanaian footballers regularly travel to Indonesia to play for local clubs, a process he has supported through visa facilitation. However, he stressed that these arrangements lack a formal intergovernmental framework and proposed a bilateral agreement to regulate sporting exchanges.

The proposed framework would include club partnerships, talent development programs, joint training initiatives, exchange matches, capacity building and technology transfer.

In response, Adams outlined the government’s renewed emphasis on grassroots and school sports development under President John Dramani Mahama, stating that priority is being placed on nurturing talent at the foundational level. He advised that relevant coordinators be engaged to ensure any future partnership is properly structured and sustainable.
