The Referees Manager for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Kotey, has said that the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Ghana Premier League will help to improve officiating.

He explained that some controversial decisions by the officials in the local league, which generate tension, will be minimized with fewer controversies.

The GFA Head of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) project emphasised that the image of the Ghanaian referees, which has been marred by bad officiating reports, will be restored with the adoption of VAR.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Alex Kotey assured that the implementation of VAR technology will enhance the quality of the GPL and make it more attractive.

“The first benefit is that it would bring some credibility to the league, a high level of credibility. A typical example is the AFCON 2024 that we just witnessed, and we all saw that it was a success because of VAR. So yes, credibility in our game will be very high if we are able to implement,” he said.

FIFA held an important meeting with GFA officials and other stakeholders to discuss the implementation of VAR in Ghana’s domestic leagues.

The meeting, attended by FIFA’s full VAR project team, marked the first phase of FIFA’s Implementation Assessment Approval Program (IAAP), a crucial step for any Member Association looking to adopt VAR.

Reports from ghanasoccernet.com indicate that GFA President, Kurt Okraku, wants the implementation to be done in the second round of the Ghana Premier League if it is approved by FIFA.
