Another winter storm is set to hit America over the weekend, battering cities with snow, fierce winds and torrential downpours.

Winter Storm Hernando is due to bring freezing winds and temperatures as low as 30F to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Cody Snell of the Weather Prediction Center said on Friday night that snowfall predictions quickly shifted from mild flurries to large pelts.

The storm is set to start taking shape on Saturday and last through Monday.

According to Snell, areas between Boston and Philadelphia can expect around a 50 percent chance of six inches of snow, the New York Times reported.

Meteorologist Bill Goodman said that the National Weather Service is predicting around six to twelve inches of snow around New York City.

Goodman added that the prediction ‘could be conservative,’ as the storm’s severity  continues to change, according to the outlet.

Experts are warning of potential blizzard conditions as well as floods focused on the East coast, while fierce winds reaching from 30 to 50mph are expected across the country.

Snell described the oncoming storm as ‘a longer duration event,’ with snowfall possibly falling for 18 to 24 hours.

Much of the heaviest snowfall is expected late on Sunday into the early hours on Monday, before the storm winds down on Monday afternoon.

Warmer winds also threaten some areas with freezing rain before snow begins to fall, the outlet reported.

Much of the storm’s progression remains unclear, as Saturday is expected to bring more clearer forecasts.

According to Fox’s Forecast Center, the storm may move offshore on Sunday and transform into a strong coastal storm.

‘Even a 50-100 mile jog east or west with the storm will result in less or more snow for millions,’ the center added.

Experts also warned of coastal flooding along the East coast, the Weather Channel reported.

This latest winter storm changed quickly, with experts seeing it mostly cling to the coastline before predictions saw it move onto land on Friday afternoon.

Forecasters warned that ‘significant’ snowfall could hit 27 states later this week and into the weekend.

The brewing Pacific storm already put much of the West and central states under winter storm alerts, according to Newsweek.

‘There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle that would have to come together at the right time for a major storm to unfold and bring heavy snow late this weekend to early next week,’ AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said.

The storm struck California on Tuesday, as the state – along with Colorado and Utah – experienced a snow deficit so far this year, according to Newsweek.

‘When this pattern finally wraps up late next week, parts of the Sierra Nevada will end up with 12-16 feet of snow,’ AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

By Wednesday, Donner Pass accumulated just over five feet of snow. Early Thursday measurements showed 55 to 70 inches of snow over the past 72 hours in northern and central Nevada, with additional heavy snow expected.

‘Along with the obvious problems from heavy rates of snow will be the potential for avalanches through the passes and in the high country,’ AccuWeather Meteorologist Alyssa Glenny said.

Earlier this week, threats of the massive storm predicted 27 states would become buried under fresh snowfall

A sudden avalanche in Northern California’s backcountry on Tuesday trapped a large group of skiers, leaving at least eight dead and one missing, according to CNN.

The lowest coastal and valley areas are bracing for rain and localized flooding, with southern and west-facing hillsides possibly receiving 4 to 8 inches.

Both Los Angeles and San Francisco were predicted to expect a multi-day storm, with total precipitation reaching 2 to 4 inches, according to AccuWeather.

Storm Hernando marks a second big winter storm hitting the East Coast this season, as snow piles from the last are just starting to melt and temperatures began to regularly reach above freezing.
