The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has urged its members to co-operate fully with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in order to ensure the smooth implementation of the government’s new VAT policy.

Under the 2026 budget and tax policy, spare part dealers are now required to pay 20 per cent VAT on certain imported product components.

The association had previously threatened industrial action over the new tax measure but has since revised its position following constructive discussions with the GRA.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Communication Officer, Mr Takyi Addo, said a meeting with Commissioner-General, Anthony Kwesi Sarpong, clarified that the policy has already been passed into law and forms part of Ghana’s legal tax framework.

“The GRA explained that the objective of the policy is not to impose hardship on traders but to ensure that taxes legitimately due to the state are properly paid,” Mr Addo said. He added that Parliament follows due process when repealing or amending laws, and changes cannot be rushed.

The GRA has pledged to monitor the implementation of the policy for six months to evaluate its practical impact. In response, the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has set up a six-member committee including representatives from the GRA and the Ghana Union of Traders Association—to oversee the process.

Mr Addo further stated that initial resistance to the new tax arose from a misunderstanding of the framework. He commended the GRA for allowing a monitoring period to assess the policy and expressed the association’s commitment to law-abiding compliance.

“The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association remains committed to constructive engagement with the relevant authorities to ensure a fair, transparent, and workable tax system for all,” he indicated.
