Accra Hearts of Oak have beaten their arch-rivals, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, on match day 22 of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League.

The Phobians beat Kotoko by a lone goal at the home of the latter, the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Hearts of Oak centre-back Baba Adamu scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute with a looping header, ending the Porcupine Warriors’ home invincibility this season.

The Phobians were able to hold on to their lead despite the sending off of right-back Emmanuel Amankwah, who was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a bad challenge that could have resulted in a straight red card.

Kotoko pressed for an equaliser but created only a few half-chances. Raphael Amponsah missed a one-on-one opportunity to put the game beyond doubt before Kotoko launched a series of attacks in the closing minutes.

Hearts goalkeeper Benjamin Asare had an outstanding performance, showing a commanding presence throughout and earning the man-of-the-match award.

This was Hearts of Oak’s first league win over Kotoko in Kumasi since the 2020/21 season.

The victory sees Hearts move within five points of league leaders Medeama and remain in contention for the title as they sit second on the table, while Kotoko remain outside the top four.

The Porcupine Warriors were aiming for redemption after their recent poor run of form, which led to the resignation of head coach Karim Zito.

Both Kotoko and Hearts headed into the clash nursing disappointment following early exits in the FA Cup Round of 64, a rare and frustrating chapter for Ghana’s two biggest clubs.
