The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has dismissed speculation surrounding Morocco’s hosting of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), reaffirming that preparations for the tournament remain firmly on track.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the CAF Congress in Dar es Salaam, Dr Motsepe addressed growing rumours that Morocco had withdrawn from hosting duties. The uncertainty intensified after South Africa’s Deputy Sports Minister reportedly indicated that his country was prepared to step in, claiming Morocco had abandoned its hosting rights. CAF’s initial silence further fueled concerns about the tournament, which is scheduled for March 2026.

However, Dr Motsepe put the speculation to rest, stressing that Morocco remains committed to staging what he described as another memorable edition of Africa’s flagship women’s football competition.

Ghana’s Black Queens are set to feature in the tournament and will be aiming for a top-four finish to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The Queens have been drawn in Group D alongside Cameroon, Cape Verde and Mali.

Host nation Morocco will open the tournament against Kenya on March 17 in Rabat.
