The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has disqualified Ukrainian athlete, Vladyslav Heraskevych for repeatedly wearing a helmet depicting images of athletes killed in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The athlete reportedly wore the helmet during training runs ahead of the competition and was cautioned to change it, as it breached the Olympic Charter.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry also visited Heraskevych in an attempt to convince him to remove the helmet before the event began.

Despite these efforts and several warnings, the athlete defied the directive and proceeded to wear the controversial helmet during his event. As a result, the ban was enforced to uphold Olympic regulations and prevent political interference.

“The focus at the Olympic Games must remain on athletes’ performances, sport, and the harmony that the Games seek to advance. It is a fundamental principle that sport at the Olympic Games is neutral and must be separate from political, religious and any other type of interference,” the IOC said in a statement.

The Ukrainian athlete opposed the ruling, arguing that other athletes who used similar approaches in the past were allowed to compete without sanctions, suggesting bias in the decision.

“I could be among the medallists in this event, but suddenly, because of some interpretation of the rules which I do not agree with, I am not able to compete while other athletes in the same situation were able to compete, and they didn’t face any sanctions,” he told the BBC.

It is understood that Heraskevych has launched an appeal against the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), hoping to overturn the ruling and compete.
