The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has called for the immediate relief of its Managing Director, citing gross mismanagement and demanding a forensic audit of the corporation’s finances.

The call came as workers staged a one-day demonstration at the GBC premises, citing concerns that the continued stay of the Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan, would further jeopardise the organisation and its staff.

Clad in red and black attire, with some wearing red armbands, demonstrators chanted war songs and called for the Director-General to vacate office.

    Union voices concerns
At a press conference in Accra, Senior Management Union Chairman Mr Ebenezar Odzaho expressed disappointment that management had ignored prior demands made through the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU).

Mr Odzaho stated that the union had lost confidence in Professor Alhassan’s leadership due to “serious mismanagement” of resources and alleged financial malfeasance, including the sale of GBC lands and unpaid staff benefits. He added that management’s actions appeared to deliberately delay processes and undermine staff morale.

“The situation has been ongoing for some time, with the union urging government intervention in the affairs of the state broadcaster,” Mr Odzaho noted.

    Staff grievances
Divisional Chairman of the GBC Union, Mr Sam Nat Kevor, highlighted challenges affecting staff, including victimisation, poor working conditions, and neglect. He noted that employees are forced to work with inadequate equipment, insufficient transportation, and poor facilities, which have negatively impacted their welfare.

Mr Kevor emphasised that the union derives its mandate from the staff and that solutions to these challenges can only be achieved through active collaboration between employees and management.

“Staff have been reduced to timidity, while executives are called upon to address the situation. It is the staff who give the union its strength,” he said.
