Meatless Monday (MM) Ghana, a public and environmental health campaign that encourages people to reduce meat consumption to protect their health, has launched the third phase of its project in Accra.

The new phase, spanning 2026 to 2028, follows a successful review of activities undertaken since Ghana joined the global initiative in 2021.

The three-year project primarily aims to expand and deepen the MM campaign across all sectors of the Ghanaian economy, ensuring it becomes a familiar and practical part of everyday life.

Mr Emmanuel Fiagbey, Executive Director of Communications Initiative for Change (CiC) Ghana, implementers of MM Ghana, said at a stakeholders’ review workshop in Accra yesterday,

“A key priority for the third phase will be deeper engagement with institutions across the public, private, and civil society sectors.”

He noted that while earlier strategies developed in 2021 and revised in 2023 remained valid, limited collaboration with the private sector had affected previous implementation processes.

Mr Fiagbey encouraged Ghanaians to avoid eating meat at least one day each week as a simple public health action to reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and protect the ecosystem.

Giving an update on MM interventions among the youth, who are key stakeholders in promoting positive health-seeking behaviour, a Programme Officer at CiC, Mr Andy Okpattah, said the project had actively engaged three public universities where the campaign was strongly ongoing.

He said activities such as student seminars, radio talk shows, food fairs, and the distribution of social and behaviour change communication materials had been vigorously pursued over the years and were yielding results.

Mr Okpattah noted that the campaign also leveraged social media platforms and influencers to promote the choice of plant-based foods over meat once a week for improved health.

Meatless Monday Ghana is a public health and environmental initiative led by Communications Initiative for Change (CiC), encouraging Ghanaians to skip meat one day a week, preferably Mondays, to reduce the risk of NCDs such as heart disease and cancer, while promoting environmental sustainability.

The campaign also advocates plant-based, nutritious local diets for healthy living.

Presently, over 40 countries worldwide, including Ghana, Indonesia, and South Africa, are implementing MM, with more countries expressing interest in joining the movement.
