Asante Kotoko have tasked caretaker coach Prince Yaw Owusu to emulate former Chelsea coach, Roberto Di Matteo by steering the club to a strong finish after taking charge midway through the season.

Prince Yaw Owusu has been placed in temporary charge of the Porcupine Warriors following the resignation of head coach Karim Zito, who stepped down after Kotoko’s elimination from the MTN FA Cup at the hands of Aduana FC.

Yaw Owusu he will be assisted by Mohammed Hamza Obeng as the club assesses its next steps.

Speaking to Luv FM, Kotoko’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku said the club is prepared to give the interim coaches time and space to prove their worth.

“For now, we will allow him to work and see how things unfold. Based on his performance, we will know the next step to take. We expect them to bring their experience, exposure, and knowledge to bear.”

To underline the club’s expectations, Sarfo Duku cited historical precedent, recalling how Roberto Di Matteo guided Chelsea to UEFA Champions League glory in 2012 as an interim coach.

“Caretaker coaches have good records. The classical example is Di Matteo at Chelsea. Now that they have been given the chance to be at the helm, they should prove to the world that they have something in them,” Sarfo Duku said.

Prince Yaw Owusu’s reign will be tested immediately, as Kotoko open their new chapter with the high-stakes Super Clash against rivals Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday, February 15.
