Amid Asante Kotoko’s current struggles, a past comment by club owner and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on the team’s woes has resurfaced.

Karim Zito announced his resignation from the club on February 9, 2026, after Kotoko’s elimination from the MTN FA Cup. The Porcupine Warriors currently lie 5th on the Ghana Premier League table.

After eight months in charge, Zito won four trophies and had a decent record in terms of match statistics.

The club’s struggles have brought back a comment made by the Asantehene in July 2022 at a meeting at Manhyia Palace, where he expressed disappointment with Kotoko’s performances and operations.

The meeting, attended by supporters and former players, aimed to address the club’s situation after the tenure of the Dr Kwame Kyei-led board ended.

At the gathering, various pressing issues were discussed, and crucial information was revealed, including the club’s staggering debt, which stood at over GH¢3 million.

The Asantehene expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction in which the club was heading, a sentiment that was acknowledged and shared by those present at the meeting.

“The current debt is from hotel expenses, players’ salaries and wages, which have also been accrued over the last two months, including June and July. So we have this debt to clear before finding a way around player recruitment. As for you [Kotoko], you are the only ones disgracing me,” Otumfuo said in Twi.
