Artiste manager and media personality Bullgod has expressed how bad police cell experiences have pushed him to embark on an art project called “Adopt a Cell”.
This project, he said, is aimed at bringing some level of comfort to detained people in various police cells.
While speaking in a recent interview, Bullgod said this initiative came to him after he was detained in a Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) cells to 72 hours.
According to him, he has had his fair share police cell experience: bad odour, lack of water, bad hygiene and the lack of inmate being able to go out and stretch, compared to prison cells.
He said his 72hrs experience there is the worst ever.
“I have been in and out of police cells for a very long time, and anytime I go there I realise the horror that we go through. And the funny thing is the people behind cells in police custodies, they suffer more than the people in prison.
“The prison is designed like a compound house so there’s a yard for the inmates to stretch during the day, but the police cell is different, its just one spot so you can’t move and people have been there for months even though the maximum time you’re supposed to spend there is 48hrs,” he said.
He added, “The last time I was there, I think I did three days at the BNI cell and that was my most scariest. The cell I was put in was big but it was just me. Usually you meet people in there that you share with but this time it was just me so for three days I couldn’t sleep, from there I was transfered to the headquarters at Accra and I did another two days there as well.
“When i got out I could not sit on my butt for close to 2hrs, ” he explained
Bullgod touched more on the project: “For me what am doing is am taking art to the cells, Mural and Graffiti.
“We are doing images of hope, peace, quotes from the Q’ran and the Bible and others. And we will do this in all cells in the country, and we have already began with the Adabraka police station.”
