Former Ghana midfielder, Sulley Ali Muntari has detailed the confusion that arose between him and Asamoah Gyan over the Black Stars captaincy during Kwasi Appiah’s tenure, stressing that despite the misunderstanding, there was no bad blood.

The issue dates back to 2012 when Muntari was sidelined with an injury at AC Milan.

After recovering, he said the club advised him not to risk returning too soon. It was during that period that Appiah informed him of a temporary leadership change.

“I was injured with Milan and after I got well, they wanted me to stay. So Appiah called me and told me since I wasn’t available, Asa will captain and when I return, I will resume the captaincy duties,” Muntari told 3sports.

Upon his return to the national team, Muntari captained Ghana in matches, including a game against Lesotho in Kumasi.

However, events took an unexpected turn during another assignment.

“I was the captain for the game against Lesotho in Kumasi and another match. When we went to Sudan, they gave the captaincy to Asamoah, and I was like, ‘No, I’m supposed to be the captain,” he said.

Muntari revealed he approached Gyan directly to address the issue.

“I walked into Asa’s room and told him, ‘Asa, I am supposed to be the captain, not you. If Baffour was around and they gave me the captaincy, I wouldn’t take it because I know he deserves it. It’s the same thing here.’ He said, ‘Muta, I went there, and they made me sign everything,’ and I said, ‘Okay,” Muntari revealed.

Despite the confusion, Sulley Muntari emphasised that he had no personal problems with Asamoah Gyan.
