A ‘very serious incident’ has been declared at De Montfort University in Leicester.
A number of roads in the city remain closed after police rushed to Oxford Street at around 6pm last night.
No further details have been released – but officers said they had launched an ‘immediate investigation’.
A large police cordon is currently in place in the area and emergency services remain on the scene.
De Montfort University said it was offering support to students and staff who witnessed what happened.
A spokesperson for the university said: ‘We are aware of a very serious incident on our campus.
‘We are working with Leicestershire Police as they launch an immediate investigation. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what has happened.

Leicestershire Police confirmed a number of road closures, including Oxford Street, Grange Street, Infirmary Square and Carlton Street.
A spokesman for the force said on Wednesday morning they were unable to confirm any further details about the incident at this time.
One woman who was walking in the area last night told the BBC: ‘It is scary because even though I’m not currently in uni, it’s so close to where you stay and it’s sad to know this is what’s happening within your area.
‘It definitely doesn’t make you feel safe. I just hope that whatever has happened, everyone is OK.’
The incident is understood to have unfolded close to the Leicester Royal Infirmary with patients and staff warned of disruptions to their journeys.
A spokesperson for the trust said in a Facebook post: ‘If you are delayed, please contact your clinic or department where possible.’
Bus routes in the area have also been placed on diversion due to the police cordon.
According to the operator First Bus, the 88, 88A and 88E inbound services are following an adjusted route.
