During the Ghanaian edition of IShowSpeed’s African tour, he began his live stream from the Asenema Waterfall in the Eastern Region and described the location as peaceful.

In his introduction, the 21-year-old streamer said, “I wanted to start somewhere peaceful, somewhere calm. I always say this: the calm before the storm.” And he got exactly that.

But what do people really know about Asenema Falls?

Unlike many of Ghana’s more renowned waterfalls, Asenema Falls is a hidden gem tucked away in the Akuapem Hills.

It is located near the scenic town of Akropong in the Eastern Region, making it appealing to visitors seeking nature without crowds.

The waterfall flows through a hillside forest surrounded by bamboo, tall trees, and dense undergrowth.

During the rainy season, water cascades 15 to 20 metres into a pool below, making this the best time to visit when the falls are most active and visually striking.

In the dry season, water flow reduces significantly, revealing a rocky face. Visits during this time are still possible, though the falls are less dramatic.

The environment is calm, with no large viewing platforms or heavy infrastructure, making it ideal for hiking, swimming, relaxation, and recreation, a chance for a first-hand connection with nature.

    Cultural significance

Asenema Waterfall has long been known to local communities in the Akuapem Hills and holds spiritual, historical, and cultural importance.

The name Asenema is generally interpreted as “the place of spirits” or “water of blessing,” reflecting its sacred status.

Historically, the waterfall served as a resting and cleansing spot for farmers, travelers, and traders, providing fresh water and a meeting point to exchange information and goods.

Rituals for fertility, harvest, and healing have been conducted at the falls for generations, with some practices continuing to this day.
