Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Latvia to personally lead a fact-finding mission into the troubling and unresolved circumstances surrounding the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia, who was studying at Riga Technical University.

Announcing the visit on social media, Ablakwa said he is accompanied by a six-member delegation made up of senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a forensic expert and a pathologist.

He revealed that Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Baiba Braže, has assured Ghana of her government’s full cooperation to help uncover the truth and bring closure to the bereaved family.a report by the Diplomatic Times stated.

“As I promised Ghanaians, the main reason for requesting this official visit is the distressing and unclear circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Nana Agyei Ahyia.

The Latvian Foreign Minister has conveyed firm assurances that her government will fully cooperate with Ghana in the pursuit of truth and justice,” Ablakwa stated.

The visit comes amid sustained appeals from Nana Agyei’s family, who have rejected an initial report by Latvian authorities suggesting their son died by suicide after falling from his sixth-floor apartment.

The family insists there may have been foul play, raising concerns that he could have been poisoned following an alleged incident of racial abuse.

Ablakwa also addressed public concerns over travel arrangements for Nana Agyei’s family, explaining that two relatives were unable to join the delegation initially due to visa delays caused by incomplete documentation.

“Unfortunately, due to visa processing delays, the two members of Nana Agyei’s family which I invited to join my delegation could not travel with us on Saturday night.

“I have been informed that their visas were issued today and therefore are scheduled to travel tonight so they can join us tomorrow morning. It is worth clarifying that all family members and experts accompanying me on this delegation are fully funded by the ministry,” he said.

He further dismissed claims that the family had been asked to pay for travel, describing them as false and misleading.

According to the Ministry, Nana Agyei’s mother was informed of the postponement and was denied travel at the airport due to incomplete documentation, not payment issues.

The delegation is expected to hold meetings with Latvian authorities, including investigators and officials from the Ministries of Interior and Education, as Ghana intensifies efforts to secure answers.

Nana Agyei Ahyia’s death, first reported in June 2025, sparked widespread concern after Latvian authorities said he fell from his apartment in Riga.

His remains were repatriated to Ghana a month later, but his family continues to demand transparency and justice.
