A six-year-old girl has drowned in an irrigation pond at Kpetoe-Sonitra in the Volta Region, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed.

According to a statement issued by the GNFS, the incident occurred on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

The child, identified as Sarah Ahiafor, accompanied other children to wash clothes at a pond-like water body at Sonitra, a suburb of Kpetoe.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the child drowned while in the company of other children who had gone to wash their clothes at a pond-like water body used for irrigation purposes,” the statement noted.

The GNFS said the child’s body was later retrieved from the water; however, all attempts to resuscitate her proved unsuccessful.

“Under the leadership of ASTNO David Dzakah, personnel promptly mobilised and conducted a search and rescue operation,” the statement said.

The body was subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service at the scene for preservation and further investigations.

Following the incident, the GNFS has cautioned parents and guardians to ensure that children do not engage in activities around ponds without the guidance of adults.

“GNFS advises parents and guardians to ensure that children do not visit or engage in activities around ponds, irrigation sites, and other open water bodies without adult supervision,” it advised.
