Voting has officially begun across the country as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) elects its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.

At the Jamestown Police Station in the Odododiodioo Constituency, voting is underway with 1,314 delegates expected to cast their ballots. The Ashiedu-Keteke District Electoral Officer, Eric Okyere, told journalists that all preparations had been completed to ensure a smooth voting process.

Voting has also started at the Light Academy in the Adentan Constituency, the Social Welfare Centre in Madina, and the Korle Bu Police Station in Ablekuma South, where voting officially commenced at 7:18 a.m.

At the Maranatha University College, voting began at 7:20 a.m., with 1,465 delegates expected to participate. Voting is also ongoing at Odorkor Saleria Basic Schools 1 and 2 in Ablekuma North, where 1,482 delegates are expected to vote across two polling stations.

Delegates have also begun voting at New Gbawe 1 M/A Primary School in the Weija-Gbawe Constituency, where polls opened at exactly 7:15 a.m., as well as at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency, where voting started at 7:00 a.m.

In the Western Region, voting is underway at the Effia Constituency, with 501 delegates expected to vote. As of 7:16 a.m., nine delegates had already cast their ballots under heavy police presence.

Voting has also commenced at the Teshie Anglican Primary ‘B’, Harrow International Preparatory School in Okaikwei Central, the Ayawaso North voting centre where the first ballot was cast at 7:10 a.m., and at Bimbilla, where voting also began at 7:10 a.m. Polls are equally underway at the Pastoral Centre in Sunyani East.

In total, over 211,000 delegates are expected to vote at more than 300 polling centres nationwide. Five aspirants are contesting the race: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The election is being closely watched as it will determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election and shape the NPP’s future direction following its 2024 defeat.

Security has been tightened nationwide, with police officers deployed to ensure a peaceful and credible process. The NPP leadership has urged delegates to vote responsibly and uphold party unity after the results are declared.
