Bishop JY Adu, leader of the New Jerusalem Chapel and longtime confidant of the late gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, has opened up about how public discussions about the singer’s personal life took a toll on him.

In a recent interview with Denis Mac-Caulley, also known as Bonshayka, on Hello FM in Kumasi, Bishop Adu recounted a moment that deeply troubled Sarpong. The late musician’s wife had tried to address their marital issues through a program hosted by Auntie Naa on Oyerepa TV.

According to him, the conversation went far beyond ordinary discussion and impacted Sarpong on both a spiritual and personal level. He noted that the musician was hurt by the remarks about him and his family made on air.

Before this incident, Adu said, Sarpong had been in good health and actively performing in church, singing and playing multiple instruments. But after the program aired, his condition declined. Adu described how Sarpong struggled with episodes resembling memory loss, occasionally regaining clarity only to lose it again.

The bishop also spoke about the challenges he faced in caring for the gospel icon, highlighting the responsibility he carried in monitoring his well-being. He recalled how Sarpong’s children quickly came to take him under their care following the death of Maama Tiwaa.

Bishop Adu emphasized that he had known Sarpong for many years and was able to provide support even when medical doctors could not cure him. During his care, Sarpong received consistent attention, with regular checks on his blood pressure and vital signs, ensuring he was treated diligently until the end of his life.
