Award-winning Ghanaian journalist and GHOne TV General Manager, Nana Aba Anamoah, has weighed into the growing controversy surrounding comments made by GHOne journalist Lily Mohammed over the government’s reported decision to grant American streamer IShowSpeed a Ghanaian passport.

The debate took a new turn after Louisa Laryea, wife of broadcast journalist Israel Laryea, launched a scathing attack on Lily Mohammed via social media.

In a post she shared after Lily’s video went viral, Louisa suggested that journalism goes beyond make-up, skin bleaching, BBL, hair and fashion, and called on journalists to prioritise research, facts, and sound reasoning.

Reacting to this post, Nana Aba Anamoah, who is currently in London, addressed Louisa directly in Facebook post.

She condemned what she described as the policing of women by fellow women using tired stereotypes and also stressed that while journalism indeed requires depth, research, and reasoning, reducing female journalists to their appearance under the guise of intellectual critique is unacceptable.

“If your defence of the profession starts by reducing female journalists to make-up and fashion, you’ve already lost the intellectual ground you’re pretending to stand on,” Nana Aba wrote.

She further noted that criticism is welcome in journalism, but insisted it must be informed, layered, and fair. According to her, Louisa’s post failed on all counts, describing it as loud and embarrassingly shallow.
