L-R: Beckham, Mbappe, Drogba and Ronaldo have stakes in some football clubs L-R: Beckham, Mbappe, Drogba and Ronaldo have stakes in some football clubs

Many top footballers have invested in various clubs, securing ownership stakes as they plan for life after retirement.

Some active players have also acquired shares in clubs to keep their investments running and generate financial gains. The list includes both active and retired footballers.

This article explores footballers who own stakes in various clubs.

    Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese superstar received a 15% stake in Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr after agreeing to extend his contract.

The estimated value of the shares is £50 million.

    Kylian Mbappe

The Real Madrid forward owns a 80% majority stake in French club SM Caen, acquired through coalition capital.

The purchase of the Ligue 2 side makes the French captain the youngest owner of a professional club in a top European league at just 25 years old.

    Gerard Piqué

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué became the owner of the Spanish club Andorra in 2018. His investment firm, Kosmos Holding, led the acquisition.

The takeover helped the club earn promotion from the Primera Catalonia to Spain’s second division.

    Zlatan Ibrahimović

The prolific striker owns a 50% stake in Swedish club Hammarby, making him the major shareholder.

This move was met with criticism from rival club Malmö FF, whose fans vandalized his statue at the club’s facility, claiming he betrayed them after playing there between 1999 and 2001.

    Luka Modrić

The Croatian legend became part of Swansea City’s ownership group in 2025.

In November, Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan’s eight-year spell in charge ended after they sold their majority shareholding to Andy Coleman, Brett Cravatt, Nigel Morris, and Jason Cohen.

Modrić joined the new shareholders to invest as he prepares for life after football.

    David Beckham

The legendary English winger is co-owner and president of Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer club in the United States. He played a crucial role in establishing the club, which began competing in 2020.

Apart from Beckham, the majority owners, Jorge and Jose Mas, contributed significantly, including the development of the $1 billion Miami Freedom Park Stadium.

    Didier Drogba

The Ivorian superstar invested in United Soccer League (USL) club Phoenix Rising FC in April 2017, becoming both co-owner and player.

He agreed to hold stakes as part of his contract while playing between 2017 and 2018, helping the club clinch the Western Conference title.

    Ronaldo Nazário

The Brazilian legend owns an 82% majority stake in Spanish club Real Valladolid, keeping himself active in the sports business.

Previously, the Ballon d’Or winner was in charge of Brazilian side Cruzeiro but was compelled to sell his shares in April 2025 due to off-pitch struggles.

The two-time World Cup winner faced backlash from fans demanding his resignation over poor performances, but stated that no convincing offer has been received to force him to resign.
