Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to publicly and clearly restate that he has no interest in any third-term agenda.

He made this appeal during a session in Parliament while raising concerns about what he described as growing pressure from some members of the President’s party to push for a third-term bid.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin said although the President has previously stated that he is not interested in extending his stay in office, especially during a visit to Singapore, he believes it is important for him to repeat this position clearly to the Ghanaian public.

“We know the President has said he is not interested in a third term, but he should say it again here in Ghana so that his party members will hear it clearly. They should not lead him into temptation because it is not possible” he said.

The Minority Leader also referred to reports that some legal processes have been filed at the courts in relation to the alleged third-term agenda.

He cautioned members of the judiciary to act with integrity and independence in handling any such cases.

He reminded judges, especially those at the Supreme Court, that Ghanaians are closely watching how they determine matters that come before them.

“When history is written, it will be your names that will be remembered, addressing the judiciary. “Ghanaians are watching how you handle these issues.” he said

Mr. Afenyo-Markin further stated that the Minority in Parliament would not be intimidated or silenced by threats of contempt.

“We will not be silenced by threats. Even if criticizing the judiciary means we will be sent to prison, we are ready to become prisoners of conscience,” he declared.

He stressed that the Minority’s actions are guided by their duty to protect Ghana’s democracy and ensure that the Constitution is respected at all times.
