The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) has publicly backed head coach Pape Thiaw following his decision to instruct players to briefly step off the pitch during the Africa Cup of Nations final against hosts Morocco, insisting the action was taken to protect the team’s safety and integrity.

Senegal secured a 1-0 extra-time victory to claim their second title, but head coach Pape Thiaw now faces a possible ban following the heated incident that marred the continental final on Sunday, January 18, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

FSF President Abdoulaye Fall, speaking in a recorded address shared on X, said Senegal was subjected to unacceptable conditions throughout the tournament and rejected claims that the move was intended to abandon the match.

“We fully support Pape Thiaw in the action he took. The intention was never to abandon the game. It was a question of principle and responsibility,” Fall said.

Fall alleged that Senegal faced logistical and security challenges even before arriving in Rabat, including delayed accommodation details, unsuitable hotel arrangements, and concerns over training venues. He said the federation resisted pressure to train at Morocco’s Mohammed VI Football Complex, citing exposure and competitive fairness.

According to Fall, security lapses on arrival forced him to personally intervene with CAF officials, leading to improved protection and revised training arrangements. He also raised concerns over ticket allocations and, most critically, the late appointment of the referee, revealing that Senegal had prepared a formal protest during the final.

Fall framed Senegal’s stance as rare defiance against host influence, insisting the federation acted out of foresight rather than confrontation, and concluding that leadership, not just results, defined their AFCON campaign.
