The PKO Boxing and Foundation has honoured Ghana’s first-ever boxing world champion, David Kotei, popularly known as DK Poison, in recognition of his historic contribution to the sport.

The ceremony took place on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the iconic Seconds Out Gym in Jamestown, Accra, where the former champion rose to prominence during his illustrious career. DK Poison etched his name into Ghana’s sporting history in 1975 when he captured the WBC featherweight title, becoming the country’s first boxing world champion.

As part of the honour, the foundation presented the veteran boxer with a cash donation, a hamper, and a citation. The organisation also pledged to take care of his medical needs and provide him with monthly stipends to support his welfare.

Officials of the PKO Foundation praised DK Poison for his immense contribution to the growth and development of boxing in Ghana, describing his achievements as a source of national pride and an inspiration to generations of young boxers.

The recognition formed part of the foundation’s “Restoring the Legends Hope” campaign, an initiative aimed at celebrating and supporting Ghanaian boxing legends who raised the nation’s flag on the global stage and laid the foundation for the sport’s success locally.

During the event, PKO Boxing and Foundation announced that it had acquired the Seconds Out Gym and would undertake a major renovation project to restore the facility to its former glory.

According to the group’s founder and Chief Executive Officer, Edward Osei, the gym is expected to be transformed into a modern, state-of-the-art training centre within six months. He noted the gym’s historical significance, having produced several world champions, including K Poison.

“Most of the boxers we have signed at the moment are from Seconds Out, and it is only fitting that DK Poison also emerged from this gym. Our objective with the ‘Restoring the Legends Hope’ campaign is to support not only world champions but anyone who put Ghana’s name on a pedestal,” Osei told 3Sports.

Osei also expressed disappointment over how some boxing greats have been overlooked over the years, describing this as a key motivation behind the initiative.

DK Poison is the second boxing legend to be honoured by the foundation this month, following a similar recognition accorded to two-time world champion Nana Yaw Konadu at Nirvana on January 10, 2026.
