The Director of Communications for the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has threatened legal action against the estate of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, should he refuse to return to Ghana to face accountability and instead remain abroad.

According to Owusu, if Ofori-Atta declines to return to the country to account for his stewardship, then his remains should equally have no place in Ghana should he pass away abroad.

Speaking in an interview on TV3, excerpts of which have been widely shared on social media, Owusu argued that Ghana should not be treated merely as a burial ground for individuals who refuse to subject themselves to accountability while alive.

“One day I will die and one day you will die. What Ken Ofori-Atta is doing, we must put it on record,” he said.

Questioning the former minister’s intentions, Owusu added, “Is he saying that he does not want to come back to Ghana at all? If he does not want to return to Ghana and in the event that he dies as all of us will any attempt to bring his corpse into this country will be challenged.”

He warned that he would personally initiate legal action to prevent such a move.

“If he doesn’t come back to Ghana and dies there and they attempt to bring the corpse to Ghana, I will sue. That will mean Ghana is being treated only as a place to bring bodies. This country is not a cemetery,” he stated.

Ken Ofori Atta is facing immigration issues in the US and he is currently in the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

His case has been adjourned to Thursday, April 27, at 1:00 p.m., when the tribunal is expected to hear both the bail application and any documents the government may file.
