Police have launched an investigation after a patrol team was attacked by a group of civilians in the Amansie South District town of Jacobu during which a service rifle was briefly seized, authorities said.
The incident occurred on 23 January at Bepotenten Sukuum when officers on routine patrol retrieved a pump-action gun from a 15-year-old boy and instructed him to ask the owner to report to the police station with valid documentation.
Police said that while the officers were returning from the operation, they were confronted by a crowd of about 100 people who blocked the road. Some members of the group were armed with cutlasses and firearms.
During the confrontation, officers were assaulted and one service rifle was taken by an assailant, police said.
In the ensuing exchange, police shot the individual who seized the weapon, while another person sustained injuries. The rifle was later recovered.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved.
The police command cautioned the public against attacking law enforcement officers, warning that those responsible would be pursued and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
