Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has urged presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to conduct themselves honourably in the party’s upcoming flagbearer contest to safeguard its traditions and preserve internal unity.

He made the call on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the signing of a peace pact by the five NPP presidential hopefuls ahead of the party’s primary scheduled for January 31, 2026

Professor Oquaye stressed the importance of fairness, unity and respect for the party’s values throughout the electoral process, warning that past incidents of unfair practices, partiality and extreme partisanship had negatively affected cohesion within the party.

“Please do something honourable for the New Patriotic Party and our tradition,” he said, adding that such challenges in previous contests had destroyed or shaken the unity.

The peace pact, he explained, was therefore necessary to ensure discipline and mutual respect among the aspirants and their supporters.

The NPP presidential primary will be contested by Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

Under the agreement, the aspirants have committed themselves to promoting unity, accepting the processes and outcome of the election and ensuring that their supporters refrain from acts that could cause violence or undermine the unity of the party.
