The Acting National Elections Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has dismissed the decision by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election, describing their participation as a ‘waste of time.’

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, Tanko-Computer argued that electoral data from previous elections clearly favours the NDC, making it virtually impossible for the opposition party to overturn the party’s dominance in the constituency.

According to him, the NPP’s decision to contest the by-election raises serious questions about the party’s electoral strategy.

“That is why I am saying something is wrong with that political party. Their election matrix is not working for them,” he stated.

He explained that in the last election, they (NDC) got over 22,000 votes, while the NPP got just a little over 9,000 votes.

“Even if they get 100 per cent of their previous votes, they will still not reach 19,000. We are already above 22,000,” he indicated.

Tanko-Computer further suggested that the NPP risk damaging whatever public credibility they still have if they proceed with the contest.

“If they want to maintain the modicum of respect they have in the eyes of the general public, they should not contest this election,” he urged.

However, he acknowledged that the opposition parties are exercising their constitutional rights to participate in the by-election, particularly given that the long-serving Member of Parliament who held the seat for four consecutive terms is no longer in the race.

“This is a man who held this constituency for four times, and he is now off the scene. So, you cannot take it away from a political party if they want to test their mettle,” he said.

The NDC elections director indicated that the party is yet to officially present its candidate and that more clarity will emerge after the close of nominations.

“After February 7, we will know who our candidate is, and then we will see what the way forward will look like,” he noted.

The Ayawaso East by-election is scheduled to take place on March 3, 2026.

This follows the sudden death of Naser Toure Mahama, the sitting Member of Parliament.
