It Was An Amicable Resolution, Not A Court Order – Agradaa’s Lawyer Explains Claims Of GH¢100,000 Damages In Empress Gifty Case

A Lawyer for imprisoned televangelist Nana Agradaa has corrected reports surrounding her long-running legal dispute with gospel musician Empress Gifty, insisting that no court has ordered her to pay GH₵100,000 in damages.

According to the lawyer, the Tema High Court issued no such directive. He said the only agreement reached between the parties was for Agradaa to settle Empress Gifty’s legal fees, not to pay compensation. The clarification was made as Agradaa was brought back to court amid ongoing proceedings on her appeal against a 15-year jail term.

The rebuttal follows widespread media reports suggesting that the Tema High Court had ruled in favour of Empress Gifty and awarded her damages. Agradaa’s lawyer described those accounts as inaccurate and misleading.

Nana Agradaa, known in private life as Patricia Asiedua, is currently serving a 15-year sentence after an Accra High Court convicted her on 3 July 2025 of fraud and charlatanic advertising. The court held that she had deceived members of her church by claiming she could “double money,” a scheme that drew national attention after a viral video in 2022 showed distressed congregants alleging they had lost significant sums.

After a trial that stretched for nearly three years, the self-styled preacher was jailed and transferred to Nsawam Prison in the Eastern Region. Before her incarceration, she had already been at the centre of a public feud involving Empress Gifty and the singer’s husband, political activist Hopeson Adorye.

The dispute was triggered when Adorye openly criticised Agradaa over a controversial dollar-gifting episode linked to acting GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi. The exchange escalated when Agradaa allegedly directed attacks at Adorye and drew his wife into the row, making derogatory comments and unproven claims about their marriage and personal lives. That prompted Empress Gifty to file a GH₵20 million defamation suit against the preacher.

On 20 January 2025, reports emerged claiming the Tema High Court had ordered Agradaa to pay GH₵100,000 to the gospel singer as part of a settlement. Her legal team says that narrative is false.

Agradaa appeared again in court on 21 January as hearings resumed at the Amasaman High Court, where her appeal against the 15-year sentence is underway. Video from the courtroom showed her with her face partially covered, consistent with her appearance at earlier hearings.

Addressing journalists after the sitting, her lawyer sought to set the record straight, rejecting suggestions that the court had imposed damages on his client.

“It is not true that the Tema High Court directed Nana Agradaa to pay GH₵100,000 to Empress Gifty,” he said, adding that both sides had only agreed on the payment of legal costs.

He also appealed to the media to verify court proceedings carefully, warning that inaccurate reporting risks misleading the public on sensitive legal matters.
