FIFA President Gianni Infantino has lavished praise on African football and the continent’s sports media after attending an AIPS Africa ceremony held in Rabat, Morocco, to honour journalists who have covered at least 10 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.

Speaking at the event, Infantino commended CAF, host nation Morocco and all the participating teams for what he described as an outstanding AFCON, stressing the tournament’s growing stature on the global stage.

“I am proud of CAF, Morocco and the participating teams during the tournament. It has been spectacular, top-level,” Infantino said.

“I’m delighted because this is a World Cup year, and for the first time we will see nine or ten African teams.”

The FIFA boss highlighted the significance of the expanded FIFA World Cup, which will see a record number of African nations competing.

“This is a World Cup year. Nine African teams will be participating in the World Cup, bringing them to all our respective countries in Africa and around the world,” he added.

Infantino reserved special praise for African journalists, acknowledging their role in promoting the game and connecting fans to their heroes.

“I commend you (the media) for always being there and reporting on the exploits of our idols. It’s thanks to you that what it is; it’s you who convey this emotion, this passion,” he noted.

He also reflected on FIFA’s commitment to youth development, citing his interaction with young African journalists.

“I met some young journalists as part of the Young Reporters Programme during the last FIFA U-20 World Cup last year, and it was a great experience for them,” Infantino said.

The AIPS Africa ceremony celebrated the enduring contribution of veteran journalists who have helped shape the narrative of African football over decades.
