Heavyweight boxing coach, Don Charles, has disclosed that legendary Ghanaian boxer Azumah Nelson had a significant influence on his career.

Charles spoke highly of the former world champion, acknowledging the boxing great for “bringing light to his people.”

The UK-based trainer noted that he is a fan of the Ghanaian sporting legend and expressed a desire to meet him on his next visit to the country.

Speaking on GhanaWeb’s SportsCheck, he commended Azumah as a pioneer who made it possible for him to have a career in boxing.

“I’m a fan of the honourable Azumah Nelson. In fact, I’ll make it a point to meet him on my next visit. I’ve come on a short visit, so on my next visit, I would like to meet him,” he said.

“People like Azumah Nelson are the pioneers. I used to tune in whenever he was fighting. They paved the way for people like myself to come through.”

Don Charles is the trainer of the reigning IBF heavyweight world champion Daniel Dubois.

Charles masterminded Dubois’ sensational win over Anthony Joshua in September 2024 to claim the world title.

Following the resounding victory, Don Charles visited Ghana at the invitation of Bronx Promotions, owned by reputable figures Samuel Anim and Lawrence Lokko.

He visited the Bronx Boxing Gym, where he spent time with some Ghanaian talents, including John Laryea, who is scheduled for his first-ever international bout in November.
