By SARAH BROOKES – SENIOR REPORTER, AUSTRALIA

    Published: 23:27 EST, 17 January 2026 | Updated: 23:43 EST, 17 January 2026

A four-year-old boy has died after a car ploughed into a bottle shop at a busy Canberra shopping centre.

The devastating incident occurred at the BWS store at the Southlands Shopping Centre in Mawson at about 10.20am on Sunday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports that a vehicle had veered off the road and crashed into the store.

ACT Policing’s Inspector Nigel Booth confirmed that the boy was a pedestrian at the time of the collision, and was found severely injured by the impact of the car.

Emergency services treated the child at the scene before he was taken to Canberra Hospital in a critical condition.

He was declared dead a short time later, police said.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital for observation and remains there.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
