Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has addressed concerns over LGBTQ+ references in the 2025 Senior High School Year 2 Physical Education and Health Elective Teacher Manual, emphasising that teaching must reflect biological sex.

His comments were made during a teachers’ training workshop on Thursday, January 15, 2025, in Tamale.

“If I wanted to be politically mischievous, I would just say that this was not produced by my era or tenor as minister, not by President Mahama, and that this curriculum was developed in 2024,” Iddrisu said.

“But what is important is to answer the question, what is it that is good for Ghana, and good for Ghanaian teachers, and good for Ghanaian learners?”

The manual, developed in 2024, sparked outrage upon its 2025 release, prompting the NPP minority in Parliament to call for a parliamentary inquiry and the dismissal of NaCCA’s leadership. NaCCA has since apologised and recalled the manuals.

Iddrisu confirmed that corrective measures have been implemented, including the recall of 736 hard copies and updates to the online version.

“All revisions and updates will be reflected in the online version available at [www.curriculumresources.edu.gh](http://www.curriculumresources.edu.gh),” he said.

He underscored the importance of clarity in teaching materials.

“There should be no ambiguity whatsoever in the definition of a man, a woman, and sex. For our purposes, the sex of a person at birth holds. That depicts and reflects Ghanaian values and our laws.”
