From technology to finance, construction to engineering, women continue to make strides proving that that gender is not a barrier.

In Ghana, the commercial tricycle industry may be male dominated but Doris Abrey, a mother of three is challenging stereotypes and thriving.

She been a commercial tricycle rider since 2019, back when the business was barely known in Kasoa.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Thursday, January 16, 2025, she stated that her journey started as a personal recovery exercise after a mild stroke.

“While I was recovering from a mild stroke. The health professionals advised me to do exercises to regain strength and later I saw someone riding a tricycle and I learnt how to ride it and I it really helped me to recover, it was a form of exercise for me, “Doris recounted.

She explained that the job has allowed her to cover her expenses, including paying her rent and her children’s school fees.

“This job has been a huge help in paying my rent and supporting my children. One of my children is currently in level 300 and I encourage unemployed women to explore this profession,” she said.

Riding through the streets of Kasoa, Doris says passengers have mixed reactions.

“Some are happy to see me, while others feel uncomfortable with a female rider,” she remarked.

Doris however appealed to the government to make the job more accessible.

“The license costs GH¢ 600, which is high for many riders. If it can be reduced, more people could get it and avoid problems with the police,” she added.
