Mawuli Wayo struck deep into added time to secure a dramatic victory for Hearts of Oak over Hohoe United on Saturday afternoon at the Hohoe Sports Stadium, keeping the Phobians firmly in the title race.

Wayo’s stoppage-time effort sealed all three points at a difficult venue, bringing to an end a tense contest that appeared destined to finish level.

The result maintains Hearts’ momentum at the top end of the table as the season enters a decisive phase.

The visitors showed patience and resilience throughout, absorbing pressure and steadily asserting control before finally finding the breakthrough in added time. Their persistence was rewarded with a valuable away win that could prove significant in the weeks ahead.

Hearts controlled long spells of the match, enjoying more possession and creating the clearer chances across both halves.

Hamza Issah came close early on but was denied by a well-timed intervention from defender Kwame Paul, while Martin Karikari also tested the Hohoe United defence. At the other end, the hosts’ best opening fell to captain Usman Safianu, who failed to convert from close range.

Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare returned to the starting line-up and delivered a composed display, keeping another clean sheet after several weeks out. The contest remained finely balanced thanks to impressive goalkeeping, with Hohoe United’s Kwaku Musah producing a fine save to deny Enoch Asubonteng late on.

Wayo’s winner reflected Hearts’ superiority on the day, lifting them to 31 points after 18 matches. They now sit three points behind leaders Medeama SC, who host Young Apostles on Sunday. Hohoe United remain in the bottom three with 18 points from 18 games.
