    At least six people were killed in a shooting in West Point, Mississippi, on Friday night, authorities say. 

    Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said in a post to Facebook that law enforcement took an individual into custody and that there was ‘no longer a threat to our community.’

    Scott later told NBC News that the shooting took place at three different locations but didn’t offer specifics beyond that. 

    ‘Unfortunately tonight we have dealt with tragedy in our community,’ Scott wrote. ‘I ask that you lift our victims and their families in your prayers. Law Enforcement is busy investigating and will release an update as soon as possible.’

    There is no information on the identity of the suspect or any possible motive for the shooting.

    In the absence of concrete details, residents reacted with horror over the tragedy and gratitude for the police officers that intervened.

    ‘Thank you for the update. Such a horrible night for a family and community,’ wrote Leslie Ann Mackey underneath the sheriff’s post.

    ‘Thank you all for your quick and dedicated response to this travesty. My prayers are with all the victims’ families and for all of you offices (sic). You all worked diligently and professionally and the community is grateful for all of our officers. May God Bless our community,’ wrote Gertrude Gaskin. 

    The Daily Mail has contacted the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for more details.
