The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement has detained former finance minister Ken Ofori Atta over issues related to his immigration status.

The development was made public through a notice issued by his Ghana based lawyers, Minkah Premo, Osei Bonsu, Bruce Cathline and Partners.

The notice, dated Wednesday, January 7, 2026, explained that the detention followed challenges concerning his continued stay in the United States.

It indicated that his legal team in the US is already engaging immigration authorities and expects the matter to be resolved quickly.

According to the lawyers, Mr Ofori Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, which under US law allows a person to remain in the country legally beyond the validity period of a visa.

The firm noted that this process is a common legal procedure in the United States.

The lawyers assured the public that the former finance minister is fully cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to regularise the situation.

The notice was signed by Justice Kusi Minkah Premo Esq., a partner at the law firm.

Mr Ofori Atta served as Ghana’s finance minister for several years and remains a prominent figure in public life.
