Former Black Stars forward Laryea Kingston believes Mohammed Salisu’s injury is a huge setback for Ghana.

The 25-year-old has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, as announced by French club AS Monaco this summer.

The injury has placed Salisu’s chances of playing at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico in huge doubt.

Speaking to 3Sports, Kingston highlighted the impact the centre-back’s absence will have on the squad during the tournament.

“It’s a very big blow for us because he is such an important figure at the back,” Kingston, who now coaches Uganda’s junior national teams, said.

“When you talk about experienced players at our back line, I think if he’s one of them and it’s going to be a very big blow for us,” he added.

The 25-year-old has been a key figure for the Black Stars, forming a dependable central defensive partnership with Alexander Djiku.

Meanwhile, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his final squad for the tournament on June 1.
