A teenage girl fell out of the back of an ambulance onto the motorway as she was being rushed to hospital during rush hour.

There were huge delays after the female patient ‘exited’ the moving ambulance onto the slip road between the M6 and M55 in Lancashire yesterday evening.

The unidentified teenager – who was already being transported to hospital – did not sustain any serious injuries as a result of the fall.

It is not clear exactly how she fell out of the ambulance.

The busy motorway was closed for almost two hours during the peak rush hour as emergency services dealt with the incident.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: ‘At 5.17pm on Tuesday January 6, we received a report that a teenage girl had fallen from the back of an ambulance on the M6 southbound to M55 slip road.

‘She has been taken to hospital but is thankfully not thought to have suffered any serious injuries.

‘The motorway was closed for a short period and has now fully reopened.’

The road was closed for almost two hours while emergency services dealt with the incident at junction 32 where the M6 southbound links to the M55 (pictured)

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said: ‘At 17.16 yesterday evening, a female patient exited a moving ambulance that was travelling on the slip road between the M6 and M55.

‘The patient was treated on scene and taken to hospital with suspected minor injuries.  Thankfully, no one else was injured.

‘We are working with Lancashire Police and wish the patient a speedy recovery.’

Lancashire Police first reported they were called to a road traffic collision and told drivers the motorway would be ‘closed for some time’.

They added that drivers should ‘look for an alternative route’ due to the disruption caused by the closure.
