Samuel Addo was allegedly assaulted in the line of duty at the Kasoa New Market Samuel Addo was allegedly assaulted in the line of duty at the Kasoa New Market

Samuel Addo, a journalist with the Class Media Group, who was reportedly assaulted by some personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service while on duty at the Kasoa New Market, has narrated the ordeal he went through.

According to him, his only crime was to record a scene where some personnel of the fire service were beating up civilians at the market.

He claimed that firemen, who were about 10 in number, started picking on him for no reason and seized the phone he was using to record the incident.

“When I came, I made a report on the morning show. So after the report, I decided to approach the fire service men to also take their side of the story, but upon reaching where they were stationed, I saw them beating and assaulting the civilians around.

“So I decided to capture the scene. While I was capturing it, one young fire service personnel approached me, and I introduced myself to him as a media personnel. He then went back. After a few minutes, I saw them coming in their numbers—about 10 of them, including the guy who approached me,” he narrated.

He added, “So they came, held my neck, pulled my hands behind me, and started assaulting me. They took my phone, tore my belt, and even took both my phone and belt away.”

Samuel Addo also claimed that he lost more than GH¢10,000 of the money he had in his bag during the attack.

“Later, I realised that my bag was open. Upon further check, I discovered that GH¢10,200 of my money was missing… It was originally GH¢20,000,” he said.

He added, “By the intervention of the Member of Parliament, that is, Phillis Naa Koryoo, I received the phone, but not the money.”

The report also stated that he has reported the incident to the Ghana Police Service, who have instructed him to go for a medical examination.

“I’ve also been given a medical form. So from here, I’m going to the hospital… I have reported to the police. They’ve taken my statement,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Class Media Group has demanded that the incident be thoroughly investigated by the police and that the person(s) found culpable be punished in accordance with the law.

The Ghana National Fire Service has refuted the claim that its officers attacked the journalist.

It stated that the officers only took the reporter’s phones, which were later returned.
