A video taken on board a Canadian budget airline has sparked outrage after passengers appeared almost piled on top of one another, with no room between their legs and the seat in front.

Amanda Rae filmed her uncomfortable experience while flying on a WestJet plane in Edmonton, Canada, with her family on December 27.

The footage, which has racked up more than 1 million views on X, prompted travelers to call out the airline to ‘do better’ and put off others who vowed to ‘never fly with WestJet’ again.

Rae, who was seated closest to the aisle, recorded her parents crammed next to one another as she asked her father: ‘Dad, can you straighten out your legs there?’

The family laughed, making light of the tight squeeze as her parents replied, ‘impossible.’

Multiple times, the father could be seen adjusting himself to get comfortable in the tight seats, but there doesn’t appear to be any visible space between his legs and the seat ahead of him.

Rae’s visibly smaller mother also had no room, and when her daughter proposed the same question, she sarcastically replied: ‘I’m gonna be sharing my leg space with him.’

WestJet describes standard seats as having the ‘least legroom’, while advertising premium, costly business seats as a ‘spacious pod’.

The airline announced in October that it would charge passengers extra for reclining seats.

WestJet reconfigured its Boeing 737-8 MAX and 737-800 aircraft to offer a ‘modern cabin experience’ with new seating options, according to the New York Post.

While it’s unclear whether Rae’s flight was aboard the new, modern planes, another Reddit user shared a claustrophobic experience, describing their trip as disappointing.

They wrote: ‘In summary, WestJet’s ultra slim-line seats are uncomfortable, and it’s definitely a worse guest experience when the flights are full, as the reconfiguration has, by design, caused delays.’

The user said they had been flying on the newly reconfigured WestJet Boeing 737 Max 8, and noted that flight attendants laughed when confirming this.

Similar to Rae’s video, they explained that passengers’ kneecaps often rest against the row in front of them, unless they are positioned uncomfortably.

However, Samantha Taylor, WestJet executive vice-president, described the redesign differently, saying: ‘The cabin has been thoughtfully designed to offer WestJet’s welcoming service at every budget.’

Rae joked in the recording when she said she would have to pay extra money if she wanted enough room for both her legs to be comfortable

‘It reflects our commitment to elevating every aspect of the travel experience and meeting guest demand for a broader range of product offerings.’

The new seat layout has allowed the airline to add an extra seating row compared to the previous layout, ultimately reducing the cost per seat.

While the prices for passengers may have gone down, Rae joked that there was only enough space for one leg, and she would have to pay extra if she wanted the other limb to be comfortable as well.

Despite the family’s upbeat attitude about the cramped situation, users online were anything but pleased at the new seats.

One user wrote: ‘Calling on WestJet……DO BETTER! This is unacceptable!’

Another added: ‘I will never fly WestJet again. Never. Piece of s*** company with low values.’

A third said: ‘I refuse to fly WestJet because of this. I’m 6 feet, so I can’t imagine what taller people go through. Their seats have been like this for years.’

Even a user who claimed to be a crew member asked others to provide feedback to help improve the situation.

The Daily Mail has reached out to WestJet for comment.

It comes after TV host Gayle King complained about how her premium seats on a United Airlines flight weren’t up to par with her usual preferences.

King moaned online that her seat from Hawaii to New Jersey didn’t have a window, despite it costing in the realm of $2,500 to $5,000.
