President John Dramani Mahama has outlined an ambitious development agenda for 2026, promising an accelerated pace of reforms and programmes aimed at strengthening social protection, transforming the economy and deepening democratic governance.

In his New Year’s Message to the Nation on January 1, 2026, the president said the gains made in 2025 have laid a solid foundation for the next phase of national development, adding that the focus for the year ahead will be on scaling up initiatives and delivering tangible results for citizens.

“The focus for the year ahead will be on scaling up initiatives and delivering tangible results for citizens,” he stated.

On education, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to quality learning, announcing that the digitalisation of schools will continue to ensure classrooms nationwide are equipped for 21st century education.

Touching on healthcare, he said government will operationalise the Universal Health Coverage through the Free Primary Health Care Programme to guarantee that no Ghanaian is denied medical attention because of financial constraints.

He added that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund will provide support for persons living with non-communicable diseases.

The president also outlined measures to strengthen food security and boost agricultural productivity, noting that agriculture will be repositioned from subsistence farming to a commercially viable sector through mechanisation, value addition and improved access to markets.

In the energy sector, President John Dramani Mahama disclosed plans to achieve a 30 per cent renewable energy share in the national energy mix, a move he said would help reduce energy costs while promoting environmental sustainability.

On governance, the president pledged to intensify the fight against corruption, stressing that there would be no ‘sacred cows’ and that every public cedi would be accounted for.

He further revealed that his administration would implement the recommendations of the Constitutional Review Committee to strengthen the 1992 Constitution and consolidate Ghana’s democratic gains.

According to President Mahama, the outlined initiatives reflect a renewed resolve to build a fairer, more inclusive and prosperous Ghana in the years ahead.
