The Nigerian military crew were detained in Burkina Faso
The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has disclosed that the country has received a Nigerian aircraft and its crew to Ghana.
According to him, this development follows the release of the Nigerian convoy by Burkinabe authorities, after it was detained for allegedly violating Burkina Faso’s airspace.
In a statement by Kwakye Ofosu on Saturday, December 20, 2025, he said the President’s Special Envoy for the Sahel, Col Larry Gbevlo Lartey received the crew.
“The President’s Special Envoy for the Sahel, Col Larry Gbevlo Lartey, received the Nigerian aircraft and its crew, just released by the Burkinabe authorities after being detained, allegedly for violating Burkinabe airspace.
Kwakye Ofosu reflects on his role as a government spokesperson
“Col Gbevlo Lartey welcomed the aircrew on behalf of the President and commended the Nigerian and Burkina Faso Governments for resolving the dispute amicably through diplomatic means,” portions of the statement read.
Col Gbevlo Lartey commended the swift resolution, noting that such diplomatic engagements reinforce ties among West African nations.
He added that the Nigerian crew will remain in Ghana to conduct technical checks on the aircraft before continuing their journey to Portugal, where the plane is scheduled for servicing.
“He said the incident is an indication that we are brothers and sisters in the West African subregion and can resolve our differences in a neighbourly manner,” he indicated.
The statement added, “The crew will rest in Ghana while conducting their technical checks and awaiting clearance to continue their flight to Portugal, where the aircraft is due for servicing.”
