Former Ghana international Derek Boateng has delivered a blunt warning about the inclusion of Nottingham Forest winger Callum Hudson-Odoi and Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah in the Black Stars squad, stating that they are unlikely to add value to the team.

His comments come amid growing calls from some fans and analysts for the inclusion of the England-based duo, who reportedly only opted to represent Ghana after the team secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, Boateng who featured in two World Cup tournaments for the Black Stars, believes the forwards should not be given the mandate to treat Ghana as their second option.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, he disclosed his concerns about their potential impact.

“To be honest, I don’t think they will add anything significant to the team right now. We need to be very careful. The Black Stars is not a place for players to come and ‘try their luck’ when they realise they can’t play for England or other European countries,” he said.

The 42-year-old, who earned over 40 caps for Ghana, emphasized that playing for the national team requires more than talent.

“Football is not just about talent on paper; it’s about the heart. When we were playing, we gave everything for the jersey. You can’t wait until you are 24 or 25, after you’ve been rejected elsewhere, and then decide you are Ghanaian,” he added.

He also warned about the implications their addition will have on the team.

“If you want to play for Ghana, you should be proud to do it from the start. Bringing them in now can even destroy the team chemistry because the players who fought through the qualifiers will feel disrespected,” he stated.
