Ghana has reaffirmed its tradition of humanitarian leadership by extending relief valued at GH¢ 10 million cedis to Jamaica, Cuba and Sudan.

The aid follows devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean and ongoing conflict in Sudan.

Ghana provides humanitarian support to Jamaica, Cuba and Sudan

Briefing Parliament on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said,“The aggregate value of relief items presented by the government of Ghana is estimated at GH¢ 10 million cedis expertly apportioned for distribution in the ratio of 50% to Jamaica, 30% to Cuba, and 20% to Sudan, reflecting the immediate and pressing needs identified in their respective contexts”.

Okudzeto Ablakwa further explained the rationale behind the aid.

“The donations to Jamaica and Cuba were as a result of the destruction of Hurricane Melissa. Over 40 people lost their lives in Jamaica, and analysts estimate the damages at $8.8 billion.

In Sudan, conflict has displaced thousands, and once again, as a country that believes in reaching out to our fellow Africans, we decided to make a donation to the good people of Sudan”, he remarked.

Okudzeto Ablakwa said the aid package also included 2,400 bags of locally produced rice, 540 bags of sugar, 100 cuttings of fortified gari mix, 377 boxes of assorted medication, 500 mattresses, 500 pillows, 50,000 t-shirts, shelter materials and water, sanitation and hygiene equipment such as 20 water storage tanks, 20 handwashing stations, and 10 emergency portable toilets.

He noted that additional consignments included 320-foot containers of Ghanaian products, including cocoa and Golden Tree chocolates.
