FIVE persons have been arrested in connection with the shooting incident which took place at a mining site at Adelekezu, near Dadwen, in the Nzema East municipal of the Western Region, on Saturday which led to the untimely of a boy.

The five are Gyenyame Owusu, 38, Matthew Asamah, 24, Nana Yaw, 15, Yaw Opoku, 16, and Kojo Agyei, 21.

They were arrested for causing harm and unlawful damage to properties belonging to the company (name withheld).

Meanwhile, remains of the deceased (name withheld), has been deposited at the Axim Hospital mortuary while investigations continue.

The Head, Public Affairs Unit, Western Region Police Command, Superintendent Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, who disclosed this in a release copied to The Ghanaian Times yesterday, indicated that two 4×4 Sport Utility Vehicles and two tipper trucks were burnt while a pick-up and a Toyota Land Cruiser were also damaged at the site.

However, 11 workers of the mining company were rescued to safety.

She explained that preliminary investigations showed that on Saturday, December 13, some Adelekezu youth had a misunderstanding with private security men of the company when they attempted to invade their concession.

In the process, the youth tried to snatch a pump action gun from one of the security men who resisted and fired shots which accidentally hit the boy.

The victim was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital for treatment, but succumbed to the injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival, Supt. Adiku added.

The death of the boy, she reported, infuriated the Adelekezu youth who subsequently went on rampage, and destroyed properties of the company, she stated.
