Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has been widely commended for the impact of the individualised credit scoring system he championed, following a new scheme by Star Oil Ghana that allows both commercial and private drivers to buy fuel on credit.
Earlier this week, the oil marketing company announced that through the My Credit Score app, which builds the creditworthiness of citizens, drivers can use their Ghana Card to register and immediately purchase fuel on credit, paying later in instalments through their mobile money accounts.
The scheme, currently being piloted in selected outlets, has already begun, with many praising the former Vice President for his vision in promoting the credit scoring system, and Star Oil for extending this opportunity to the public.
Following Dr Bawumia’s Facebook post congratulating Star Oil and expressing delight at the benefits the initiative brings to drivers, many Ghanaians took to social media to commend the former Vice President.
“Visionary leader. People who don’t appreciate you are definitely people who don’t appreciate or understand intelligence,” wrote a social media user, Terry Odartei.
“You are always ahead of others in seeing into the future,” added another, Abubakar Sahabela Ahmed.
Another user wrote, “Dr Bawumia’s vision is truly transforming Ghana. This initiative is further proof that his digital reforms are making life easier for ordinary citizens.”
Commercial drivers have warmly welcomed the innovation and the scheme.
Anawal, who described himself as the Madina Chief Driver, praised the development, saying it will greatly benefit drivers.
“I want to commend Star Oil for this good initiative to assist drivers. It will help us a lot. Sometimes at the beginning of the day, many of us have empty tanks, and if we now have this opportunity to buy fuel on credit and pay later through the app, it will help us a lot,” he said.
Uber driver Daniel Opare Lambert also expressed his excitement.
“I am very happy about this because it gives us options. It takes a lot of pressure off us because it is not easy to work and be buying fuel with all your earnings at the same time.”
Taxi driver Enock Asante said he now understands the value of the former Vice President’s credit scoring concept.
“I heard about it last year when he said people could buy phones on credit through it and pay in instalments.
“People made fun of it, and I didn’t really see how it could work. But someone helped me get the app on my phone, and I got fuel on credit without paying anything. So, I think Dr Bawumia deserves praise and Star Oil too,” he said.
Another taxi driver, Frederick, also shared his experience after getting fuel on credit.
“I got to know about this yesterday when I came here (Adenta SDA Star Oil) to buy fuel. This is a very good initiative that will help drivers. Some days the returns are so bad that you cannot even buy fuel to roam.
“Buying fuel in bits doesn’t help us. But if there is an opportunity to buy a full tank, then this will really enhance our work. I have already downloaded the app and registered, and here I am, I have fuel on credit,” he said.
