Cameroon FA President, Samuel Eto’o has been accused of influencing the decision to drop striker Vincent Aboubakar from Cameroon’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

British media outlet The Sun claimed that the former Barcelona striker’s eagerness to safeguard his status as the nation’s all-time top scorer contributed to the Neftci PFK player’s exclusion.

Eto’o holds the record as Cameroon’s all-time top scorer with 56 goals in 118 matches, while Aboubakar is close to the feat, having netted 45 goals in 117 appearances.

This accusation by the media outlet is said to have surprised football fans in Cameroon, who found it strange and questioned why a legend would take such a decision.

The Sun added that the Cameroon FA declined to comment on the matter when contacted for a reaction to the claims.

Neither the FA nor Eto’o has responded to the report yet, but a statement is expected soon.

Eto’o has faced intense scrutiny in the country after Cameroon failed to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in the play-offs.

The sacking of head coach Marc Brys just weeks before the AFCON has added to the off-field turmoil the team is experiencing as they prepare for the tournament in Morocco.
