President John Dramani Mahama has rejected calls to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing such demands as premature and urging the public to give the institution more time to fulfill its mandate.

He made the remarks during a meeting with the National Peace Council on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

President Mahama stated that abolishing the OSP at this time would be hasty and stressed the need to strengthen anti-corruption institutions in the country

“I think it’s premature to call for the closure of that office. The unique thing about that office is it is the only anti-corruption agency that has prosecutorial powers to be able to prosecute themselves without going through the Attorney General and so people had mistrust for the Attorney General because the Attorney General normally is a member of government and is a Minister of State and so they believe that the Attorney General would be very reluctant to prosecute his own.

Why didn’t they speak then – Kwesi Pratt questions timing of calls to scrap OSP

“But if there’s an independent office like the Office of the Special Prosecutor, it won’t matter who you are because they have security of tenure and they have prosecutorial powers whether you’re a member of government or you’re a member of a previous government or you are anybody who has misappropriated public funds, they have the law is behind them to be able to prosecute you”, he stated.

President Mahama urged the OSP to speed up work to show that the Office is still relevant.

His comments follow calls to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor after the detention of private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu.
